Bryan Busby
chief meteorologist
kmbc-tv | kansas city, mo
Since third grade, Bryan knew he wanted to make his passion for weather a career choice. He reached out to his favorite TV meteorologist, Dick Goddard. at WJW-TV in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Goddard invited Bryan down to the TV station once a year all the way through his high school years. On one of the last visits, Bryan told Dick Goddard that he was going to major in meteorology. Mr. Goddard was flattered, and encouraged Busby to pay it forward. This is a directive that Busby has embraced his entire career.
After anchoring high school radio and reading reports on the local National Public Radio affiliate, Bryan attended St. Louis University, during which he interned at KTVI his freshman year. He has been a TV weather anchor ever since, studying and forecasting midwest weather since 1978.
Busby started taking on protégés of his own, in an effort to pay back the generosity of his mentor in Cleveland, Dick Goddard. In fact, his first broadcast student was a senior about to graduate!
To date, Busby has mentored well over 200 meteorologists, in markets large and small ranging from St. Joseph, Missouri all the way up to New York, New York!
Through the years, his critiques have paved the way to his proteges obtaining their Seal of Approval or Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the highly respected American Meteorological Society (AMS). Busby served on the AMS Board of Broadcast Meteorology and was elected chairman of that board by his peers from 1997 to 1998.
Busby is well known and respected in the industry from his tenure in the Kansas City market to being a finalist for a position at Good Morning America, and being named AMS Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year in 2011.
